A Guide to Sustainable Fabrics: What They Are & Why They Matter

When shopping for your little ones, comfort and style are essential—but so is knowing that the clothes they wear are kind to the planet. At The Green Crib & Kid, we carefully select each piece in our boutique with sustainability in mind, and that starts with the fabrics. But what exactly makes a fabric sustainable? And how do different eco-friendly materials compare?

Sustainable fabrics are materials made with minimal environmental impact—this includes how the fiber is grown, how the fabric is processed, and how long it lasts. They may require less water or energy to produce and they avoid harmful chemicals. In children’s clothing, these fabrics also have the added benefit of being breathable, soft, and safe for sensitive skin.

Here are some of the most popular eco-conscious fabrics, along with how they differ and what they’re best for:

1. Organic Cotton

  • What it is: Cotton grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
  • Why it’s sustainable: It uses significantly less water than conventional cotton and supports healthier soil and farming practices.
  • What it’s great for: Everyday basics like t-shirts, leggings, onesies, and pajamas. It's soft, breathable, and gentle on delicate skin.

2. Bamboo Viscose (Rayon from Bamboo)

  • What it is: A semi-synthetic fiber made by processing bamboo pulp.
  • Why it’s sustainable: Bamboo grows rapidly, requires no replanting, and uses little water. The processing can vary, so we ensure our brands use closed-loop or eco-responsible methods.
  • What it’s great for: Sleepwear and swaddles—it's incredibly soft, stretchy, and temperature-regulating.

3. TENCEL™ (Lyocell & Modal)

  • What it is: A fiber derived from sustainably harvested wood pulp, usually eucalyptus.
  • Why it’s sustainable: Made in a closed-loop system where water and solvents are recycled. Certified biodegradable and compostable.
  • What it’s great for: Dresses, rompers, and basics with a silky feel and excellent moisture-wicking properties.

4. Recycled Polyester (rPET)

  • What it is: A synthetic fabric made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • Why it’s sustainable: Gives plastic waste a second life and reduces dependence on virgin petroleum-based fibers.
  • What it’s great for: Outerwear, fleece jackets, and swimwear where durability and water resistance matter.

Every Fabric Has a Footprint

While no material is 100% impact-free, choosing sustainably produced fabrics is a step in the right direction. It’s about progress, not perfection. By supporting brands that use better materials, we all contribute to a healthier planet for our kids.
