What does Fair Trade mean?

Fair Trade is a global movement that aims to create equitable trading partnerships between producers in developing countries and consumers in developed countries. When you see one the products we sell with a Fair Trade Certified label, it means it has been produced under rigorous social, environmental and economic standards.

The apparel industry has a complex and sometimes exploitative supply chain. Many garment workers, particularly women, face low wages and unsafe working conditions. Fair Trade certification ensures that garment workers receive fair wages that meet or exceed the cost of living, allowing them to afford basic necessities like food, housing, and education. The support of community development programs that provide access to education and healthcare for workers and their families is also an important Fair Trade initiative.

Fair Trade Certified factories must also comply with safety regulations, including fire safety, proper ventilation, and adequate sanitation. Workers have reasonable working hours and overtime is paid appropriately. Environmental sustainability is a priority, such as minimizing the use of harmful chemicals, promoting sustainable farming practices, and implementing waste reduction strategies throughout the production process.

Fair Trade Certified products are independently verified by accredited third-party auditors. This certification process helps consumers identify products that meet these standards so they can make informed purchasing decisions. Here at The Green Crib & Kid, we support Fair Trade Certified brands that are working to create a better future for everyone involved in the making of the clothing we sell.
